Europe, especially Germany, has been a source of great inspiration for Roland. The compact, walkable cities and towns with lively public squares, numerous beautiful public parks, and many bicycle facilities are wonderful models to follow. Great city projects are being completed today. For example once one of the most polluted cities in Europe, Bitterfeld is in the process of completely turning itself around into a model of green and recreational rich city with large, clean lakes at its periphery, where once huge open pit coal mines lay deep, with healthy forests and miles of well used bike trails. In recent years Roland experienced amazing roof gardens in Stuttgart , swimming ponds near Chemnitz , and some of the world's best, yet unknown, flower shows in numerous German cities. Roland thinks that surely there is an opportunity to learn from the European example to revitalize our cities and live a healthier and more sustainable lifestyle benefiting us and the environment, all the more necessary as we become all the more aware of global warming dire consequences.
